Lecture
Interconnection of technology, aesthetics and meaning – Prof. D. Schumacher (TheGreenEyl, Berlin, New York)

How does the aesthetics of technologically conveyed content influence communication and thus the perception of the message? How can we promote the connection between medium and message?
As part of the lecture, Prof. D. Schumacher is inviting you on a journey of related works and, using the project "The only certainty" as an example, a detailed insight into his studio’s design process. He will focus on the connection of technology / aesthetics, as well as their relation to content / context and the meaning associated with it.

Prof. D. Schumacher is a full professor for Interaction Design and head of the department of Industrial Design at Magdeburg-Stendal University. He is founding partner of the design studio TheGreenEyl in Berlin and New York. Previously Prof. Schumacher taught nationally and internationally at numerous universities. At the Berlin University of the Arts he was an artistic associate at the Advanced New Media Class Prof. Joachim Sauter. He holds a degree in digital media design from the Berlin University of the Arts, studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona and is a professionally trained engineer in industrial electronics, fluent in Spanish, German, as well as English. His work was awarded and exhibited at Kunsthalle Mannheim, E-Arts Shanghai, Ars Electronica, Europrix, Japan Media Arts Festival and D&AD, among others.

Studio TheGreenEyl is a design and research practice based in Berlin and New York. They create exhibitions, installations, objects, images, interactions and algorithms. Always driven by a profound engagement with content, context and format, they explore such topics as language, technology, vision or the city. Within each project they seek to employ the most suitable means, which sometimes requires creating new techniques and tools. They enjoy collaborating with writers, sound artists, philosophers, textile designers, software and electrical engineers, illustrators and various other disciplines.

Studio TheGreenEyl was founded in 2009 and has since worked internationally with partners from culture, industry and research, such as the Jewish Museum Berlin, Bauhaus Museum Weimar, Humboldt Forum Berlin, Pinakothek der Moderne, MIT Media Lab, Carl Zeiss, Disney Research, Universal Music. Their work has been exhibited at the MoMA New York, Ars Electronica Linz, Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin and at the Design Museum London.
