What is ‘Digitocene’? Digital art in the Digitocene Era – Vadim Smakhtin (–Da, Russia)

Referencing projects by contemporary hybrid artists, students, and faculty at –Da., –Da. MA program supervisors will talk about the symbiosis of technology, body and society in the contemporary environment. They will address the issues and the new cultural objects and questions associated with the Digitocene phenomenon.

Digitocene is an era we are living through, and yet it will never come. It’s an era where we can no longer separate the digital and the non-digital.

Digitocene attempts to humanize digital technologies through the integration of digital, biological, social, and real dimensions; media, mixed, augmented, cyber and physical reality; visual, tactile, audio and visual interaction.

Within Digitocebe, we exist in a reality where bodily boundaries, expanded by our instruments and gadgets, are spread across servers in data centers and teleported through VPN. Modes of interaction between the user and the environment are transformed; and so are technologies of perception. Hybrid spaces alter the previously established sense of freedom and accessibility, resulting in new modes of interaction not only with digital and physical realities, but amongst ourselves as well.

–Da. is the first in Russia practice-oriented Digital Art MA program at the Far East Federal University, working at the intersection of art and science to develop experts in new disciplines. With digital art seen as a mediator between science and society, –Da. introduces innovation and new tools for creating projects of relevant topics.

Speaker:
